Biography

Dr. Ishara Atukorala is a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne, leading the scientific research program within Professor Lisa Hui’s multidisciplinary perinatal research team. Her work focuses on extracellular vesicles and placental models to deepen our understanding of pregnancy physiology and complications, with the goal of developing more effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
During her PhD, Dr. Atukorala explored cadherins as potential therapeutic targets in colorectal cancer progression and metastasis. Her research led to the development of a monoclonal antibody designed to block their active binding sites. With over six years of experience in extracellular vesicle research, including applications in cancer biology, she continues to contribute valuable insights to the field.
Beyond her research, Dr. Atukorala is a dedicated mentor, supervising higher-degree research students and fostering the next generation of scientists.
