Dr Dan Casalaz is Director of the Neonatal Paediatrics Unit at the Mercy Hospital for Women.
His team of neonatologists and neonatal nurses manage the busy neonatal intensive care and special care units at the Mercy Hospital for Women, which is one of four hospitals in Victoria able to care for newborns with the most complex care needs. They provide the full range of medical and critical care services, and have established pathways with Royal Children's Hospital for access to surgical advice, consultation and transfer.
The Neonatal paediatrics department are an integral part of the perinatal multidisciplinary clinical service. Whenever we anticipate that the birth of a baby will involve admission to the special care nursery or intensive care, the neonatal staff provide prenatal counselling and orientation to the newborn care service to help smooth the road ahead for these families.
