When you are expecting more than one new baby

There is palpable excitement in the room when families discover they are expecting twins! Nevertheless, there are some women with multiple pregnancy that are referred to us for additional surveillance to ensure the best possible outcomes. Some of the reasons why twins might come to our clinic, rather than remain with their usual maternity care provider, include:

twins that share a single placenta ("monochorionic twins")
one baby is much smaller than the other ("growth discordance" or "selective fetal growth restriction")
both twins are small
a fetal structural abnormality is found in one or both twins
twins that share a single placenta AND a single sac (monoamniotic twins)
triplet pregnancies
