Online Genetics in Pregnancy Course

Learning outcomes

• Strengthen your understanding of DNA and inheritance with specific relevance to reproductive health.
• Understand the principles of prenatal screening and reproductive carrier screening.
• Identify couples that should be offered a genetic counselling referral.
• Become familiar with professional society recommendations for clinical practice.
• Be able to discuss options for screening in a manner that respects a woman’s preferences and values.
• Describe and compare the common prenatal screening tests, including first trimester combined test, non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and second trimester serum screening.
• Provide general information to patients about prenatal diagnosis and chromosome testing.
• Understand the place of assisted reproduction technology and preimplantation genetic testing.

• Tutorial 1: Genes, chromosomes and genomics
• Tutorial 2: Principles of reproductive screening
• Tutorial 3: Prenatal screening for chromosome conditions
• Tutorial 4: Genetic carrier screening
• Tutorial 5: Prenatal diagnosis
• Tutorial 6: Assisted reproduction and preimplantation genetic testing

Delivery mode

Course completion requires approximately 12 hours of elearning. Students have the flexibility to study in their own time and location. Program material can be accessed through the eLearning Education app on mobiles and tablets with iOS, Android or Windows systems. Program material can also be accessed on a PC using a web browser.

Assessment

A Certificate of Completion is issued upon satisfactory completion of the course assessment requirements: 6 tutorial unit self-assessments and 12 case studies.

Entry requirements

Participants of this course should be either enrolled in, or have graduated from, a midwifery, nursing, genetics, ultrasound, genetic counselling or medical degree.

Continuing Professional Development

Participants who successfully complete this course will be eligible to receive CPD points from RANZCOG, RACGP (Cat 1), ACRRM, ASUM or the ACM. Sonographers and radiologists providing obstetric ultrasound are also welcome to enrol and receive CPD points from ASUM for individual tutorials, or the entire course.

Course directors

Associate Professor Lisa Hui MBBS(Hons) PhD FRANZCOG CMFM DDU 

A/Prof Lisa Hui is a maternal-fetal medicine sub-specialist and a clinical researcher with an international reputation in the field of prenatal diagnosis. She is an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Melbourne and was awarded a Medical Research Futures Fund investigator grant for her work in perinatal genomics. She was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Society for Prenatal Diagnosis in 2020 and is an associate editor of the scientific journal Prenatal Diagnosis. She has given numerous local and international educational talks on prenatal screening and diagnosis.

Dr Tristan Hardy MBBS (Hons) MRMed PhD FRANZCOG

Dr. Tristan Hardy is a dual-trained obstetrician and gynaecologist and genetic pathologist. He is the Medical Director of Genetics for Monash IVF Group, a consultant gynaecologist at Repromed and a consultant pathologist at SA Pathology. His PhD in preimplantation genetic testing focussed on improving diagnostic outcomes for couples affected by pregnancy loss. He is passionate about genomics education and is part of the Global Education Outreach Committee of the International Society for Prenatal Diagnosis.
