Our speakers and topics
This Twilight we will be discussing all things to do with Cleft Lip and Palate- from prenatal diagnosis to the patient’s experience, to genetic counselling, to postnatal surgery here and around the world
Here is our fabulous lineup:
- Ms Debbie Fry very recently gave birth to beautiful Finn, and so the memories of how the pregnancy and postnatal period played out for her are very fresh. We are so delighted that Debbie will join us with a reflection on the patient experience, which will really ground us for the rest of the session.
- Dr Michael Bethune is no stranger to our Twilight fans! Michael is an obstetric ultrasound specialist at Mercy Hospital for Women, renowned for his wonderfully concise and clear approach to ultrasound diagnosis of fetal anomalies. We are so delighted that Michel will join us for ‘What you see and what you don’t: Diagnosing Cleft Lip and Palate at Prenatal Ultrasound’
- Ms Melissa Graetz (senior genetic counsellor) and Dr Lil Downie (Medical geneticist) comprise our amazing Perinatal Genetics team. Together, they will take us through the ‘What happens next?’ after the ultrasound has diagnosed a cleft lip and/ or palate. Providing counselling immediately after a shock diagnosis of a fetal anomaly is not easy, and Mel is just the person to give us the tips and tricks to ensure we get it right. Lil will take us through what are the Genetic ‘Red Flags’ not to miss, and how we put it all together for the family.
- Finally, we are thrilled to have Mr David Chong, a craniofacial surgeon from the Children’s Hospital joining us. David is the current president of the Australasian Cleft Lip and Palate Association. He is the perfect speaker to not only walk us through what the surgical repair involves- and the amazing results- but will also give us a whirlwind tour of Operational Smile International, an organization he volunteers with several times a year. Operational Smile International has more than 6000 active medical volunteers from all around the world, all committed to ensuring that anyone born with a cleft condition receives safe, effective and timely surgery and comprehensive care, regardless of where they call home.
