Summary

Few diagnoses generate as many questions in the ultrasound room as fetal hydrops. Although uncommon, it remains one of the most challenging conditions we encounter in fetal medicine- requiring a thoughtful, systematic diagnostic approach and close collaboration across obstetrics, fetal medicine, paediatric subspecialties and neonatology.

Importantly, some causes are highly treatable, making timely recognition critical for both fetal and neonatal outcomes. 

We're delighted to have three outstanding speakers who will guide us through the practical aspects of managing fetal hydrops.

Dr Hannah Skrzypek, MFM specialist at Mercy Perinatal will open the evening with ‘The Clinician's Toolbox: An Approach to Fetal Hydrops’ sharing a structured and practical framework for investigating hydrops and tackling the differential diagnosis. 

Hannah has special interests in maternal medicine and fetal cardiac conditions, which she puts into practice not only at Mercy Perinatal, but when teaching at the University of Melbourne. 


A/Prof Ali Fung, Clinical Director MFM at Mercy Perinatal will discuss ‘Hydrops: Diagnosis and Management of Fetal Anaemia’, covering contemporary investigation, fetal assessment and treatment strategies.

Alison holds MFM consultant positions at the Mercy Hospital for Women and as a PIPER Perinatal consultant at the Royal Children's Hospital. Her interests lie in preterm birth prevention, complex fetal ultrasound procedures and in fetal neurology. In addition to her substantial clinical responsibilities, Alison’s passion is medical education. 


Finally, Dr Darren Hutchinson, Head of Fetal Cardiology at the Royal Women's Hospital and Paediatric & Fetal Cardiologist at the Royal Children's Hospital, will present on the ‘Diagnosis and management of fetal supraventricular tachycardia’,highlighting how advances in fetal cardiology have transformed outcomes for many of these babies.   

Darren holds Fellowships in both Paediatric Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiac Imaging with special interest in non-invasive Paediatric Cardiac Imaging and consults in all aspects of Paediatric Cardiology.
