A paper by Callander and colleagues (BJOG 2025;0:1-11) that dropped in BJOG ignited much-spirited debate.

It concluded standard public maternity care (free in Australia), when compared to private obstetrics care, was associated with a doubling of perinatal deaths, a tripling of 3rd degree tears and a near tripling of postpartum haemorrhage. And to top it off, public care is more expensive to the public purse.

Our Paper: Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes and Health System Costs in Standard Public Maternity Care Compared to Private Obstetric-Led Care: A Population-Level Matched Cohort Study

We recognise the many implications of a paper with such a hot message. So did the press. Some clinicians pounced on the findings, others recoiled.

…and some stepped back. Many on our database emailed Mercy Perinatal, kindly asking we even handedly review this paper and provide guidance. Of course we can. At least, we will try.
 
So, in this special Global Obstetrics Journal Club on the 10th of September, we will take a close look at this paper. Our aim will be to objectively review the science of the paper itself.

To do this, we have invited folks outside of Australia to be on our expert panelist. Professors Gordon Smith (Cambridge) and Jenny Myers (Manchester) are superb obstetrician epidemiologists. Neither have practiced private obstetrics.
 
Once again, Global Obstetrics Journal Club will be co-hosted by our resident Prof. from Oxford, Aris Papegeorghiou, (Editor in Chief of BJOG, Scan Academy).

The papers will be first presented. We have then obtained an interview with the lead author! After that, the expert panel will discuss the paper. And of course we will leave plenty of time for Q&A so the worldwide audience can join us in the room.
